This tour through the Lencois Maranhenses national park includes offroad driving, walking on the dunes, bathing in the lakes and observing the fauna and flora.

The Lençois Maranhenses National Park (PNLM) expands over 100 km of region in Brazil. It offers a unique view of dunes, sandbars, and lakes with clear water formed by rainwater. Another attraction is the Preguiças River, which surrounds a part of Barreirinhas City. Walks along the river reveal a wide variety of landscapes and animals such as reptiles, amphibians and migratory birds. Preservation of this natural ecosystem is underway with scientific research, ecological tourism and environmental educcation, all through the National Network of Nature Preservation Units (SNUC).

Itinerary

The tour begins between 4:30 and 6:00 in the morning, from Sao Luis to Barreirinhas by van or micro-omnibus with air-conditioning. You will stop to have a regional breakfast (it is not included). After about 3.5 hours, you will arrive in downtown Barreirinhas, where you will trade the van for a specially-equipped 4x4 car. You will drive into the park and explore its dunes and beaches. Then you will return to Barreirinhas to have lunch (it is not included). At about 16:30, you will return by van or micro-omnibus to Sao Luiz. Arrival is about 21:00, after which you be transferred back to your hotel. 



Participant guidelines

There are no shops in the park so it is suggested that you carry a backpack with sunscreen, towels, water and snacks like fruits, juices, cereals and cookies. The car has an ice box.

Important: you are not allowed to carry alcoholic drinks to the park and you must take care of your own garbage.

Clothes: pants made of synthetic material; dry tee-shirts with good ventilation; sunscreen with at least FSP 30; sunglasses and camera.

Weather: Maranhão has only one season: summer. Summer is divided into: intense summer sun from July to December, and summer with rain from January to June. The months with the heaviest rainfall are March and April. It is worth remembering that the winds are very strong in the months August to December.
