This tour through the Lencois Maranhenses national park includes offroad driving, walking on the dunes, bathing in the lakes and observing the fauna and flora. We also travel by boat to various traditional fishing villages and walk along the park's beautiful beaches.
With more than 100 km by the seaside, Lençois Maranhenses shelters dunes up to 50 meters high and lakes with different sizes and depths. There are mangroves, rivers, vegetation and many migratory birds. Lençois Maranhenses borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the municipalities of Santo Amaro and Barreirinhas to the south, the municipality of Paulino Neves to the east and the municipalities of Santo Amaro and Primeira Cruz to the west.
The nearby Barreirinhas City is surrounded by the wonderful Preguiças River, where you can have a pleasant walk or travel by boat to a number of traditional fishing villages such as Mandacaru, Atins, and Vassouras. Cabure is a village located between the Atlantic Ocean and Preguiças River. During the tour to these villages, it is possible to observe a variety of birds, a mangrove area and a wonderful sunset.
Day 1: Sao Luiz-Barreirinhas
The tour begins between 6:30 and 7:30 in the morning with transport to Barreirinhas by van or micro-omnibus with air-conditioning. We will stop to have a regional breakfast (not included). We will check-in at the hotel in downtown Barreirinhas, after which we will stop to have lunch (not included). After lunch, we will visit National Park of Lençóis Maranhenses, located about 15 km from Barreirinhas. The drive into the park is made with a specially-equipped 4x4 car. During the tour, we will stop to dive into the lagoons, which are perfect for bathing, and of course to take pictures. On our walk, it is possible to see all the exuberant and richly varied areas of flora and fauna. We return at the end of the day to sleep in the hotel in Barreirinhas.
Day 2: Barreirinhas-Sao Luiz
After breakfast we will travel by boat on Preguiças River to the APA (Área de Proteção Ambiental) in the Lencois park to visit Vassoura, a fishermen village on the riverside. We will continue by boat to visit Mandacaru, another typical community of fishermen. We will have a chance to go up to the village lighthouse for a panoramic view of the Preguiças River mouth and dunes. From here, we go on to Caburé, a place located between Preguiças River and the ocean with desert beaches. We stop to have lunch (not included). We return to Barreirinhas at about 16:00. At 17:00, we begin the return journey to Sao Luis by air-conditioned mini-bus. The drive takes approximately 3.5 hours. During the route, we will stop for coffee (not included). Arrival in Sao Luiz is at about 21:00, after which you will be transferred back to your hotel.
Participant guidelines
There are no shops in the park so it is suggested that you carry a backpack with sunscreen, towels, water and snacks like fruits, juices, cereals and cookies. The car has an ice box.
Important: you are not allowed to carry alcoholic drinks to the park and you must take care of your own garbage.
Clothes: pants made of synthetic material; dry tee-shirts with good ventilation; sunscreen with at least FSP 30; sunglasses and camera.

Weather: Maranhão has only one season: summer. Summer is divided into: intense summer sun from July to December, and summer with rain from January to June. The months with the heaviest rainfall are March and April. It is worth remembering that the winds are very strong in the months August to December.
