Though small, the town of Santo Amaro offers many attractions. Located near Barreirinhas and the gateway to the national park, the city hosts many cultural events such as Bumba-Meu-Boi, the Feast of Saint Mary, the Feast of Our Lady of the Conception, and the Feast of the Holy Spirit. These events occur in the main square at the Santo Amaro church, a meeting place for religious and cultural life. The local handicraft is varied. Artisans use materials from coconuts and tucum in order to crochet and do embroidery. The surrounding natural beauty of the Alegre River, Santo Amaro Lake, Ponds Seagull, and the village of Bethany add to the town. From the town it is possible to walk in the dunes, swim in the lakes and watch the sunset in Lencois Maranhenses national park.
After breakfast, you will drive first along a paved road, followed by a sand track, to reach Santo Amaro. The total drive time takes over 3 hours. The road often runs along streams, and there will be stops to enjoy the local vegetation and drink some of the clear, clean water. Entering the town of Santo Amaro is another adventure, which includes crossing the river to reach the city center (during the rainy season). The car must stop at the bank, allowing you to cross by boat and catch another car at the other side.
You will stop for lunch in the city, then continue with a specially-equipped 4x4 car to reach the dunes (about 15 minutes away). Once in the park, you can walk the short distance to Seagull pond and a landscape that looks like a mirage. Seeing is believing!
In the late afternoon, you will return to Barreirinhas (around 3 pm).
Participant guidelines
It is necessary to check-out before the tour because we will return after the time established by the hotel. (Generally the hotel offers a bathroom to change clothes.)
There are no shops in the park so it is suggested that you carry a backpack with sunscreen, towels, water and snacks like fruits, juices, cereals and cookies. The car has an ice box.
Important: you are not allowed to carry alcoholic drinks to the park and you must take care of your own garbage.
Clothes: pants made of synthetic material; dry tee-shirts with good ventilation; sunscreen with at least FSP 30; sunglasses and camera.

Weather: Maranhão has only one season: summer. Summer is divided into: intense summer sun from July to December, and summer with rain from January to June. The months with the heaviest rainfall are March and April. It is worth remembering that the winds are very strong in the months August to December.
