The Lencois Maranhenses National Park (Parque Nacional dos Lencois Maranhenses) is in the state of Maranhao, in the northeastern region of Brazil. It is located to the east of Baía de São José. The landscape of this region is completely unique, comprised of low flatlands that get flooded seasonally, along with white sandy dunes. Covering an area of about 1000 sq km, there is very little vegetation, despite the abundance of rain. The area has a unique and rather rare ecosystem, consisting of mangroves, beaches, and buriti palm trees, all shaped by the Preguiças River.

With its white, sandy dunes, Lencois Maranhenses looks like a desert at first glance, but its temperature remains steadily between 25 °C (77 °F) and 35 °C (95 °F), quite unlike the typical desert. There is usually a cool breeze to temper the hot sun. Even though it might look like a desert, the region is just outside the Amazon basin and receives a large amount of rain annually. The rainy season lasts from January to June, and freshwater collects in valleys of the sand dunes, forming clear blue and green lagoons that are at their fullest from July to September. The remaining months of the year remain dry, and the lagoons lose much, or even all, of their water.

The ideal time to travel to Lencois Maranhenses is just after the rainy season, from May to October, when the lagoons are full and the temperatures quite moderate.

The Lencois Maranhenses National Park is a wonderful place to connect with nature. Bring light clothing like shirts, shorts, sandals such as Papete, hats, swimwear and a raincoat. A few warm clothes are recommended for the nights. Also remember to carry sunscreen, sunglasses and insect repellent.
